"What the Happy is Going on Here?"

Rolling out the Positivity Train!! All Aboard!





Many of us have seen 300 plus days of pure craziness and it's time we get on with our lives and take control. This pandemic is going to end and we are going to be vaccinated and taking down our masks and smiling at each other by the end of year! Let's get ready by taking care of ourselves like never before starting now!


America is in need of more than just a shot in the arm for the Covid virus. We are going to need a shot of joy and happiness to put us back on track. The Gallup World Happiness Poll for the end of 2019 (pre-pandemic) showed America at its lowest world ranking ever at #19 in the world. The metrics used are things like the economy, freedom, healthy life expectancy, trust in government and business from corruption,(oh boy)


The most concerning thing is our youth. Adolescents are reporting sudden declines that are alarming in their level of happiness and that bodes poorly for all of us as a society. This started in 2012. The happiness rose steadily from 1991-2011 in our younger people and then suddenly took a turn for the worse. I am going to put the blame on too much technology and not enough time playing in the dirt!! Getting our youth back out and involved in what they love to do is critical as we move forward in 2021!


It is not just our younger generations that are getting sucked into the vortex! Average Americans check their phones 80 times a day and 10% do it over 300 times in 24 hours. We are checking our emails 17 times a day with between 74-435 emails. Gloria Mark from the UC Irvine study of digital distraction finds it takes 23 minutes and 15 seconds to recover your focus after interruptions. People switch activities every 3 minutes with an average attention span of 40 seconds!(hello Tik Tok!)


We have so much anxiety and stress because we never get settled and we are feeding our minds a bad diet too often! Time to take back our conscious level of peace and serenity. Back to the basics is what we all need to spend some time focusing on and make a daily plan to be kind ourselves. Turn off the programmed propaganda machine on TV (CNN and Fox) and chose your own path of information that enhances your knowledge, happiness, and well-being. Look for it in a search! Become a seeker. It has never been easier than now to go on the computer and find some direction. An example I found recently is www.greatcourses.com with a wide range of interests available to further your enrichment in whatever category floats your boat.


Make a daily checklist of things that make you feel productive and happy and put it on your kitchen table or refrigerator. It gives you a sense of taking control and it is always there to remind you of what is important. (Out of site, out of mind? Is it on your phone or computer? Forget to look at it recently?)





Move your body more and get out of the house! Eat a little cleaner and get ready for summer. Bolster your immune system.


Find a good book and spend some quality time with it in a quiet place!


Plan a trip for local adventures and get one planned for the end of the year to do something big!


Time to live our life again! Dream, act and let's have a great 2021!
